The Matthay Festival is designed to offer participants direct and concentrated access to the Matthay teaching principles as they apply at all levels, including that of the performing artist. Daytime sessions include lectures, demonstrations, performances, and master classes, and a recital is held each evening.

The year 2003 marks the forty-sixth annual gathering. Previous Matthay Festivals have taken place at many locations throughout North America, including Philips Academy at Andover, the University of Maryland, the University of Central Florida, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, San Jose State University, Williams College, Pennsylvania State University, the University of South Carolina, Wittenberg University, the University of Kansas, and Columbus State University.







Festival Location



King College, located in Bristol, Tennessee, is in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains at an altitude of about 1,800 feet. The 130-acre hilltop campus is two miles from the center of Bristol, a city of 43,300 residents. Bristol is actually two cities of almost equal size; Bristol, Tennessee, and Bristol, Virginia.

Many Festival events will be held in the beautiful King College Memorial Chapel. The Memorial Chapel, with seating for 650, is the site of Chapel Services and Convocations. The lower level has classrooms, rehearsal rooms (piano, voice, organ, and harpsichord), and faculty offices for the Department of Performing and Visual Arts.

Lodging Options

Dormitory accommodations and meals are available at King College at very reasonable rates of $ 34 (1 day), $74 (2 days), $111 (3 days) and $143 (4 days). There is also an additional fee of $12 for linens. Participants are responsible for their own housing arrangements. Accommodations are also available at the La Quinta Inn, which is located at Exit 7 off interstate 81 in Bristol, Tennessee. To obtain the preferred rate of $45 per night (single or double occupancy), guests should phone the Inn at (276) 669-9353 and identity themselves as Matthay Festival participants. The deadline for the preferred rate is May 28, 2003.







Banquet

The banquet is scheduled for Saturday evening, June 14, at 5:30 PM at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, Virginia, a wonderful historic inn with excellent regional food. The buffet menu includes fried chicken, grilled pork loin, fried or baked catfish, country green beans, corn and sweet peppers, mashed potatoes, spoon bread, salad bar with fruit and cheese display (welcome to our vegetarian members), soup du jour, rolls, and dessert table. The fee for banquet attendance is $40, including tax and gratuity.



Travel to Bristol, Tennessee
