In 1923, Tobias Matthay distilled the content of
his many writings into nine fundamental steps which he claimed formed the basis of his
teachings. He believed that the physical conditions enabling effective finger technique
were dependent on rotational exertions of the forearm, and he felt that these
sensations should be grasped by the student even before the fingers were called into play.
This brief pamphlet, long out of print, is now again available, and artists, teachers, and students
may find it helpful as a step-by-step analysis of the conditions underlying finger
individualization.
