Mission and Vision

Mission Statement

The American Matthay Association furthers an understanding of the pedagogical work of Tobias Matthay, encourages excellence in piano performance and teaching, and builds cooperation and community among pianists and piano teachers. The Association fosters meaningful musical experiences through an annual festival, educational resources, and mentorship.

Annual Festival

Celebrating musical excellence by providing performance and scholarship opportunities for sharing the legacy of Tobias Matthay, encouraging professional development through pedagogical demonstrations, and nurturing connections among participants around the world.

Educational Resources

Publishing the Matthay News twice yearly with accounts of activities past and present, maintaining a website that provides access to the organization’s history, and promoting both reprints and new pedagogical materials, recordings, and other publications related to the teaching principles of Tobias Matthay.

Mentorship

Supporting students through the Clara Wells Fellowship, encouraging artistic and professional development at all stages of life and career, and building lasting relationships within a supportive musical community.

Vision Statement

The American Matthay Association envisions a vibrant, connected community of pianists and teachers engaged with––and in dialogue about––the musical and pedagogical ideals of Tobias Matthay, his students, and all who pursue a natural approach to the piano.

The AMA seeks to promote these ideals as widely as possible, enriching the lives of piano players of all ages and abilities through meaningful engagement with Matthay principles as an evolving tradition. In so doing, the AMA hopes to inspire future generations by serving as an open hub for this shared knowledge: preserving, advancing, and paying forward the richness of Matthay’s work.
